The fishery population in Negombo who were displaced by the tsunami have managed to flee to the North East under trying circumstances to continue their industry with the support from the local and international social welfare organisations, writes W. Wilfred Silva, Daily News, JA-ELA 140206 at http://www.dailynews.lk/

But soon they had to return back to Negombo with the recent disturbances in the North East. Today they live a miserable life without permanent shelters.

When these people took their grievances to the Rev. Fr. Anthony Humer Pinto, the Superior of the Salesians Sri Lanka and the Head of the Don Bosco Institute, he took the initiative to provide them temporary shelter under the roof of Don Bosco Centre, Dungallpitiya, and accommodated the children of these displaced families. They are being provided with the facilities to continue their education at the same Centre.

These displaced fishery folk told 'Daily News' that although the statistics of the displaced were collected by the Grama Seva Niladharies of the respective areas they came from, except only on one occasion, they had not received any aid from Government source.

P. J. Shiranthi, mother of two kids said she lost one of her kids during the tsunami and she could not save the baby engulfed by the waves. "We lost everything. We were also sent away from Kokilai refusing assistance, as we had gone to Kokilai for fishing.

On our return we found our house and all that we had, had gone with the tsunami and we came here. Today the only solace for us is the concern shown by Don Bosco Institute. We are very grateful to Fr. Pinto who look after us", she said.
