He said this when he re-opened the reconstructed tsunami hit Arugam Bay Vocational Training Centre at Pottuvil recently.
The reconstruction project was jointly sponsored by Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network and Free the Children (a Canadian based NGO) at a cost of Rs. 40 million. Canadian High Commissioner Mrs. Rachael Bedlington and Free the Children President Craing Kielburger were also present.
Minister Gamage said the Vocational Training Authority has been able to provide training facilities for 60,000 students annually so far.
His Ministry has planned to increase this annual intake to 100,000 students soon.
He said more than 40,000 lives were lost during the 2004 Tsunami catastrophe. The damage cost caused to the national economy by way of destruction to property amounted to billions of rupees.
He said several other Vocational Training Centres in the North East and the South too suffered colossal damage by the tsunami and requested the two institutions which rebuilt the Arugam Bay Centre to lend a helping hand to revive other damaged vocational centres as well.
The Minister also thanked Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network and Free the Children for their assistance towards the reconstruction of the Arugam Bay Vocational Centre.
