The Governments of Australia and Canada have come forward to assist the construction of more than 1,000 housing units and to improve infrastructure facilities which are vital for the affected people in the North and East, by providing a grant of over Rs. 387.9 million, writes Ranil Wijayapala, Colombo, Daily News 090506 at http://www.dailynews.lk/

Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Nation Building and Development Dr. A. S. Kunasingham told the Daily News yesterday that the Australian Government will provide a grant of Rs. 191 million (A$ 2.5 million) for the construction of more than 700 houses for resettled persons in the Mannar and Vavuniya districts.

He said the Ministry of Nation Building is providing Rs. 250,000 for the construction of a housing unit.

"Apart from this, the Australian Government is also granting another Rs. 66.9 million (A$ 875,000 for a sports for peace project.

"The aim of this project is to promote peace while improving sports facilities in the tsunami affected North and South and through the exchange of sports teams between the North and the South", Dr. Kunasingham added.

In addition, a grant of Rs. 26.78 million has been made for the UNDP to provide technical assistance for the Government's de-mining programme.

The Canadian Government is also providing a grant assistance of Rs. 103 million (US $ 1 million) for housing and infrastructure facilities in the conflict affected Northern part of the country.

"This would help us provide assistance to construct more than 250 houses for people in the affected areas, Dr. Kunasingham added.

These projects are to be executed by the UNDP as part of the Transition Project in collaboration with the Ministry of Nation Building and Development.

"At National level, a Project Steering Committee consisting of the relevant agencies and donors and chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of Nation Building and Development will be responsible for Policy Guidance and Coordination between the institution and Groups involved in the projects", Dr. Kunasingham added.

"At District Level, there is District Review Board chaired by the Government Agent for Project acceptance and approval", he added. The signing ceremony of an agreement between the UNDP and the Ministry of Nation Building and Developmet will take place at the Ministry on May 10 at 11 am, Dr. Kunasingham added.
