The President made this assertion at the Progress Review Meeting of the Fisheries Ministry held at Temple Trees last Thursday, where each and every aspect of the Fisheries Industry was discussed at length.

The President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and senior officials of all institutions under the Fisheries Ministry took part in the discussion.

Fisheries Minister Felix Perera disclosed that his Ministry expects to add rupees one billion foreign exchange to the State coffers during this year and that in comparison to previous years his Ministry has earned Rs. 800 million foreign exchange within the last few months.

The intrusion of foreign fishing trawlers into our territorial waters, the urgency of Naval Guidance to regularise coastal patrolling and the establishment of an Oceanic University and its academic activities were among matters reviewed at the meeting.

The Ministry officials explained that steps have been taken to manufacture 54 fishing trawlers and to provide interest free loan facilities to purchase multi-day fishing trawlers within this year under the Cey-nor Foundation.

It was also revealed that the projects of replacing fishing boats destroyed in the tsunami catastrophe are at the moment progressing successfully.

The breeding of ornamental fish for export, a reasonable price to the fisherman for the fish he sells to the Fisheries Corporation, distribution of fish harvest among the countrywide consumers including the Districts of Badulla and Bandarawela, prawn farming and the establishment of fish canneries were the other matters discussed and reviewed at this progress review meeting.

The President also stressed the need to find solutions to the problems of housing and standard of living of the fishery families.
