Southern Provincial Councillor, Asoka Danawansa, told the Daily News that, tsunami affected families stranded in the 100-meter buffer zone, should be paid Rs. 5-lakhs, as compensation in order to build their houses, writes D. The Government currently grants Rs. 2 1/2 lakhs to a family whose house and lives lost in the category of complete destruction, and Rs. one lakh to those whose house was lost in the semi-destruction," he said. "But those who lived outside of 100-metre boundary were paid Rs. 250,000 and 100,000 even without loss of lives just for the reason their houses were totally destroyed or partly destroyed, due to tsunami," he pointed out.

They not only received money as compensation but also received new houses through NGOs in those areas," he pointed out. But those stranded in the 100 metre buffer zone, for well over 1 1/2 years after tsunami, are getting only 1/2 lakhs, or one lakh only, he said.

"As such, the government should take steps to give each of those families, Rs. 5 lakhs, and Rs. 2 lakhs, respectively as compensation. He stressed, "I have intended to bring the matter to the notice of the provincial council as a motion at the next council meeting.
