Your article Tsunami cleanses Pangandaran beaches (Aug. 18) was very disappointing. Much of what was stated in the article is true: Ugly warungs filling the beach, litter, a "don't care" attitude from the local government in Ciamis, writes Vaughan Thomas, Ciamis, West Java, The Jakarta Post, Opinion and Editorial - August 28, 2006 at http://www.thejakartapost.com/. Forwarded by Budhi Mulyawan 300806.

What was disappointing was that your reporter concentrated merely on the negative. There are many people working hard to improve Pangandaran and save its environment from destruction. Pusat Pendidikan Lingkungan Pesisir (PPLP) is a local NGO commited to preserving and enhancing the coastal environment. Many volunteers, both local and long-term Western residents, are working hard to this end. It is a shame your reporter was not able to speak to any of these people. It is a shame they get so little official support.

It is an uphill battle when faced with official indifference. Your article made it clear that Ciamis would be more inclined to help if Pangandaran generated more tourist income. It is Ciamis indifference that's keeping the tourists away.

If Regent Engkon Kamara and his team in Ciamis are finding it so very difficult to devise a strategy for the future of Pangandaran then we invite them to come here and talk to us. We've got plenty of ideas. Maybe they won't like all of them -- in fact that's a guarantee -- but at least we're trying to do something.
