Japanese assistance for community empowerment in Hambantota |

The Japanese government has provided Rs. 16.8 million to the Livelihood Rehabilitation and Community Empowerment in Tsunami Resettlement Areas in Hambantota which is implemented by JEN, a Japanese NGO operating in the tsunami relief work in the Hambantota district since January 2005, a release by the Japanese Embassy said, writes Daily News, Colombo, 261006 at http://www.dailynews.lk/. The project will provide vocational training in fishnet mending and home gardening, which will enable tsunami victims to acquire necessary skills for income generation.
In addition, group counselling is to be conducted by social workers to improve their psychological conditions and enhance the bonds within communities. The extracurricular activities will also be organised for children to enhance childhood development.
The project will further support for tsunami affected people in resettlement areas through livelihood rehabilitation and community empowerment.
This grant will be utilised to procure materials and equipment for fishing and home gardening.
A part of the grant will also be allocated to hire a group of qualified specialists including instructors, social workers and psychologists to ensure the quality and effectiveness of these activities. The grant will also cover the management and administration cost of the project.
The signing of the Grant took place at the Japanese embassy on October 23. Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Kiyoshi Araki, Program Officer Emi Yamada signed the Grant Contract in the presence of Hambantota Additional District Secretary M. Manawadu and Embassy First Secretary Dr. Yuji Miyahara.
