EU project support in water and sanitation in Batticaloa and Kalmunai |

The European Union under the Asia Pro-eco Post-tsunami Programme will provide over 750,000 euros to provide support to the urban poor by rehabilitating and expanding basic infrastructure in the water and sanitation field in the tsunami-hit areas of Batticaloa and Kalmunai, writes Daily News, Batticaloa 171106 at http://www.dailynews.lk/. The project WASSER (Water and Sanitation for Settlements in Eastern Region, Sri Lanka), is a partnership between the cities of Munich (Germany), Batticaloa, Kalmunai and the NGO Emas International.
National Project Co-ordinator Dr. Fahmy Ismail said, this is a follow up of the city of Munich's post-tsunami humanitarian commitment where the Mayor and citizens of Munich provided immediate and medium term help to Batticaloa and Kalmunai.
Dr. Ismail said the objectives of this project are to support the cities in particular to improve the living conditions of tsunami victims regarding their sewerage treatment, to provide cost-effective ways for the supply of drinking water, to construct a well driller school and creating job opportunities through training in the field of well drilling and enhancing the capacity of the Council in the field of environmental planning and management and environmental management information systems.
