Galle High Court Judge Chandrasena Rajapakse yesterday sentenced to death the two accused who were videographed in the act of snatching a gold necklace from a woman during the tsunami in Galle on December 26, 2004, and thereafter causing her death, writes Kumara Udayaratna, Yakkalamulla Group Correspondent, Galle, Daily News 141206 at http://www.dailynews.lk/.

The videotape presented as evidence showed the two accused, Kandalama Ajith Silva and Mapalagamage Nuwan Kumara, snatching the gold chain from Desika Kalyani of Rathgama and pushing her towards the raging waves.

Judge Rajapakse said the death penalty should be carried out on such criminal elements to deter more crimes of this nature.

The Judge took 150 minutes to read the 160-page verdict.

A large crowd had gathered inside and outside the Court to receive news of the verdict.

The main evidence in this case was the video taken from the third floor of a building in Galle by an ITN cameraman. The tape was telecast on ITN and photographs of the incident appeared in newspapers.
