New life for two tsunami-hit schools |

The Government has fully reconstructed the Sri Jinarathana Vidyalaya, Peraliya, Galle and Thotagamuwa Wijayaba Vidyalaya, Hikkaduwa which were devastated by the Tsunami tidal waves, writes Uditha Kumarasinghe, Daily News, Galle 231206 at http://www.dailynews.lk/.Forwarded by Budhi Mulyawan 241206.
This follows a request made by Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva from the Italian Government to rebuild these two schools in the Galle district, a Health Ministry spokesman told the Daily News. The Civil Protection Department of Italy and the people of Italy have taken steps to renovate these two Tsunami affected schools in Galle district at a cost of Rs. 250 million. Minister de Silva who has discussed with the Italian Government the renovation of 150 Tsunami affected hospitals in the coastal belt also requested them to rebuild these two schools destroyed by the tsunami. Responding to the Minister's request, the Italian Government in collaboration with Italian well wishers of Italy have rebuilt these two schools, the spokesman said. Nearly 1,000 students are studying at the Sri Jinarathana Vidyalaya which was completely destroyed by the December 26 Tsunami. The Government with the assistance of the Italian Government has constructed four buildings within the school premises. In order to evoke the memories of Tsunami tragedy, the water level of the tsunami waves has been marked at the destroyed building of the Sri Jinarathana Vidyalaya. Minister de Silva together with Italian Ambassador Pio Mariyani reopened the Sri Jinarathana Vidyalaya on Thursday while the Thotagamuwa Wijayaba Vidyalaya was reopened yesterday.
