Landslides displace 521 families in Badulla, Nuwara Eliya PDF Print E-mail

Landslides and soil erosion in the Badulla and Nuwara Eliya districts have displaced 521 families, writes  Razeena Razick and Wellasse Bandara, Daily News, Colombo 281206 at http://www.dailynews.lk/2006/12/28/.Forwarded by Budhi Mulyawan 291206.

This includes 18 families in Badulla, 49 in Sorantota, 38 in Ella and 18 in Uva Paranagama. The earthslips have displaced 200 families in these areas.

This displaced are accommodated at the Gelwattha temple, New Berg estate school, Mastenna Government school and Diyathalava Gelkanda kovil.

In the Nuwara Eliya district, 88 families in the Hanguranketha Division and 233 families in Walapane have been cleared from dangerous areas and accommodated in temporary camps.

Thirty five houses in Walapane and 22 houses in Hanguranketha been destroyed by the earthslips. Nuwara Eliya District Divisional Secretary R.M.R.B. Rathnayaka said they have provided enough facilities and foods to the victims.

The victims need to be resettled in alternative lands instead of the devastated lands but there is a shortage of Government lands.

Therefore, the lands have to be procured from the Land Reform Commission and estate companies. The places affected by earthslips in Walapane are expected to be inspected today (28) by Professor of Geology Kapila Dahanayaka from the University of Peradeniya. A survey is being conducted in affected areas in Walapane by the Geological Survey, said Walapane Divisional Secretary Nandana Galaboda.

Inspections were started in affected areas in Badulla by the National Building Research Organisation yesterday from Uva Paranagama, says Divisional Secretary N.P.N.M. Wickramasingha.

Transport in these areas has come to a standstill. A few main roads in Walapane and Hanguranketha in the Nuwara Eliya district are damaged.

He said that the Kandy-Badulla Raja Mawatha been closed for past six days due to earthslips.
