The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) under the guidance of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry will implement housing development projects at a cost of Rs. 338.29 million in tsunami hit Batticaloa, Ampara, Matara, Trincomalee and Kalutara districts, writes Mohamed Naalir, Daily News, 231107 at http://www.dailynews.lk/.

Nearly 1,000 housing units will be constructed under this project for those who lost their houses during the tsunami. The agreement to commence the construction work on this project was signed by the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry, G. Piyasena and NHDA Chairman Mohammed Rafeek at the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry. The International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) will contribute financial assistance for the proposed housing scheme.

The Trincomalee district will have 428 housing units - 336 housing units in recently cleared Vakarai and Batticaloa, 70 housing units in Kalmunai and 97 housing units and 30 housing units will be constructed in Matara and Kalutara districts.

Accordingly, the project will be co-ordinated by the Post Tsunami Coastal Rehabilitation and Resource Management Programme and Post Tsunami Livelihood and Suppor Programme (PTCRRMP) Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development Ministry.

Each beneficiary family will be allocated Rs. 250,000 to construct a new housing unit and Rs. 100,000 will be allocated to renovate existing housing units.
