The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) is to construct 200,000 housing units at a cost of Rs. 36.4 billion under the Nagenahira Navodaya Programme in the Eastern province within the next three years to overcome the housing problems of those below the poverty line, writes Mohammed Naalir 301007 at http://www.dailynews.lk/.

The NHDA will implement this mega-project under the guidance and supervision of the Housing and Common Amenities Ministry.The programme will comprise the renovation of existing houses and construction of new houses. The proposed housing project will be implemented in Trincomalee, Ampara and Batticaloa districts. NHDA sources said the project will commence in 2008 and will conclude in 2010.

Thirty four thousand housing units were constructed for poor families in the Eastern Province under the NHDA's 2005-2007 housing development programme.

Houses were constructed for those displaced due to the tsunami and ethnic conflict and existing houses too improved under this scheme.

Under this project 118,732 housing units will be constructed for low income families while 4,200 housing units are being constructed for middle income families. Meanwhile 91,000 existing housing units will be renovated.

Fifty thousand new housing units will be constructed during 2008 while 35,000 housing units are being renovated. The estimated expenditure for this project is Rs.14,573 million.

Thirty five thousand housings will be constructed in 2009 while 26,500 housing units are being improved. The estimated cost for the project is Rs.10,667 million.

Thirty thousand and seven hundred fifty new housing units will be constructed in the Batticaloa District in 2010 while 29,000 housing units are being improved. The estimated expenditure for the project is Rs.11,245 million.
