Genesis Housing Group has donated £50,000 to Homeless International to help build homes for a community of families in Sri Lanka who have been living in temporary shelter since the Asian tsunami hit in December 2004, writes Genesis Housing Group and Homeless International 131107. Forwarded by Geoff Payne 141107.
Ten families were living close to the beach in December 2004. Through a community-based organisation the families have formed a savings group and purchased the plots of land. The community will carry out much of the building work themselves and hope to have the homes completed and occupied by April next year. Homes and common amenities will be built through Sevantha, a local Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) and partner of Homeless International. Genesis Housing Group will fund and provide assistance to construct housing and related common infrastructure for ten families left homeless following the tsunami on Boxing Day, 2004. Building work will include housing with private toilets, access roads, drainage and water connections. Anu Vedi, Genesis Housing Group Chief Executive, says, 'We are extremely pleased to support the efforts of Homeless International and its partners in the local area who are working so hard to help rebuild lives after the tsunami. We look forward to working with them and see this as the start of a long-term relationship between Genesis and this community of ten enterprising families in the Galle district of Sri Lanka” Larry English, Chief Executive at Homeless International said, 'We are very pleased that Genesis Housing Group has provided funding for Sevanatha’s rebuilding initiatives, and encouraged furthermore by Genesis’ desire to support the ongoing development of these communities. Relationships, such as these, between UK Housing Associations and community-based housing institutions in developing countries are vital and exemplary'. - Ends -

NOTES TO EDITORS Homeless International supports partners in Africa and Asia that are working with poor communities to reduce poverty and to improve living conditions. We believe that poor communities have a right to safe and secure housing, and that through working together to express their ideas and needs, they can play a central role in creating equitable cities. Homeless International’s uniqueness from other charities draws from the long-term working relationships we have with partners rather than providing one-off grants for short-term projects. This means we can develop new initiatives with our partners over a number of years.
