Officials say a strong earthquake sent panicked residents fleeing from their homes in central Indonesia, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, writes Daily News, Indonesia, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 at http://www.dailynews.lk. Forwarded by Budhi Mulyawan 211008.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake Monday had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 and struck 65 miles (105 kilometers) beneath the sea. It was centered 90 miles (145 kilometers) northeast of Palu, a coastal town on Sulawesi island. Mohammad Gusti, a local geophysics official, says some residents fled their homes, but there did not appear to be any damage or causalities from the quake. Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
