Sunaryo Suradi said Durham University geologist Richard Davies had initiated the conference on "Subsurface Sediment Remobilization and Fluid Flow in Sedimentary Basins" to professionally discuss the mudflow in Sidoarjo based on the latest data.

According to Suradi, Antara news agency reported, the geologists would present papers on why the subsurface sediment became reactive and flowed out.

Suradi said the Sidoarjo mudflow had drawn the geologists` concern from the world over and that now they had wanted to discuss the matter so as to find an explanation as to the causes and origin of the mudflow.

"The geologists international conference is very interesting and important for the future of the Porong area in Sidoarjo," he said.

The seminar is sponsored by oil companies BP, Chevron, ConocoPhilips, DONG Energy, Oilexco, Shell and StatoilHydro. (amr)
