Delegates from Bonn, Leiden, Grenoble and Perm will take part in a three-day conference in Oxford from Thursday.

It is funded by the European Union and will include site visits to the area around Osney Island, which suffered in last year's flood.

The city council said the aim was to "develop solutions to help areas that suffer from serious flooding".

Among the guest speakers will be James Elles MEP and Lord Chris Smith, director of the UK Environment Agency.

Bob Price, leader of Oxford City Council, said: "We will discuss managing flood risk, the use of new technologies and the impact of planning policies and inter-agency working."
