The 6.7-magnitude quake also shook buildings in Taiwan when it hit at around 0906 (0006 GMT) at a depth of 10 km (six miles).

The US Geological Survey also recorded a 7.0-magnitude quake in Indonesia's West Sumatra on Sunday.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from either of the quakes.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck central Japan last Tuesday, killing one woman and injuring more than 120 people.

The Indonesian quake prompted no tsunami warning when it struck near the Mentawai islands off Sumatra at a depth of 32 km (20 miles).

Seven people in the West Sumatra capital of Padang were injured in the quake, which was followed by at least three aftershocks.
