Information

In cooperation with Television Maldives, UNICEF and The IFRC assisted in the production of a television documentary on the post tsunami water and sanitation situation in the Maldives, which showed how the government and international community are contributing to the recovery effort. The first screening on National TV was on the 30th of August. UNICEF facilitated the identification and interview of a girl from Dhaalu Atoll as part of the TIME Magazines feature issue on Asian Heroes.

Local press covered the launch of the Development Assistance Database and provided stories to local media on Disaster Risk Management. Three radio programmes on shelter targeting IDPs went to air on VOM, five more will air in coming weeks. The programmes were produced with UN assistance.

Food

WFP and UNICEF conducted a nutritional assessment (weight and height) of children under five years, including IDPs, on Kudahovadhoo in Dhaalu and Buruni in Thaa. The findings will be presented shortly.

Health

WHO is supporting the development of a new Medical Supply System catering for all health facilities. This strategy will subsequently be used in all regions, with regional stores distributing to atoll hospitals, health centres and health posts. A computerized medical supply system will be established along with store management training.

Water

A country-wide training in assessing water quality will start next week in Lamu with support from WHO. During the week of training a rain-water harvesting survey will be conducted. This should feed into a presentation at the Rainwater Conference in November, where WHO is sponsoring five participants from the Maldives.

Waste

The 3rd and last batch of training in HCWM is leaving for Bangalore. When they come back in mid-September representative from all regions will have been trained and supported by WHO. Various supplies and equipment for safe handling of HCW will also be funded under the WHO tsunami project.

Shelter

The shelter project has now signed agreements to provide housing funds to 38 out of 58 islands. Under these agreements a total of 1147 houses have been slated for repair and a total of 130 houses will be reconstructed. The remaining 25 islands that will receive help with rebuilding shelter will have their agreements processed in coming weeks.

Altogether, the shelter project will repair 2700 houses and reconstruct about 300.

Money, materials and tools are now being advanced.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure project is continuing with the contracting process. The companies that will reconstruct and repair various harbours have almost been determined.

The harbour infrastructure on Eidafushi Island is now complete.

Disaster Management

The Disaster Management Project held a workshop to discuss the finer points of an Early Warning System. Discussions have also been initiated with the IFRC to work jointly in different areas of disaster risk management, such as safe shelter construction, capacity building, preparation of the standard operations procedures and community disaster management planning.

The technical specifications for the construction of safe shelters have been developed and a process begun to buy equipment for the national and regional emergency operation centres.

Two training programmes on Basic Emergency Response/ First Aid will commence from 9 September. About 60 participants - largely volunteers - such as Boys Scout, Girls Guide, Island Youth Development Officers, members of the Island Women Development Committees, Police, Army and Coast Guard will take part.
