The Government of Sri Lanka is now implementing a comprehensive programme of action to rebuild and provide income generating activities to improve the Tsunami and Conflict affected families, writes Daily News 291005 at http://www.dailynews.lk/

The European Union is now extending support through the UNDP by granting Euros 7.4 million (approx. Rs. 900 million) for the uplift of tsunami and conflict affected families in the North and East regions. The support will be given through two projects:

1. Quick Recovery Project (QRP);

2. Livelihood Development Project in the North & East (LDP).

1. Under the Quick Recovery Project, the activities will include;

(a) Support to local bodies by assisting in waste removal and storage;

(b) improvement to access roads and transport corridors;

(c) Provision of employment by engaging in activities such as; debris removal and small infrastructure development.

2. Livelihood Development Project - In the North & East, activities under this project will be:

(a) Assisting in the provision of productive inputs in the Fisheries and Agriculture Sectors;

(b) Construction of associated community infrastructure relating to livelihood development.

The sub-projects will be implemented through the Government Agents of the respective districts and the UNDP. The District Review Board in each district will approve these projects.

The UNDP, European Union and the Government of Sri Lanka will sign Grant Agreements on Monday, at 3.00 p.m. at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation in the presence of its Secretary.
