EC grant for two projects in North and East |

The European Commission (EC) has extended support to the Government by granting Rs. 900 million (Euros 7.4 million) to carry out the work in relation to uplifting the lives of the tsunami victims and victims of ethnic conflict in the North and the East regions, writes Daily News 011105 at http://www.dailynews.lk/

A press release issued by the UNDP said the Sri Lanka Government was utilising the grant provided through the UNDP to assist in livelihood of those affected by war and tsunami disaster and for the waste disposal in the North and East.
The Government is implementing a programme of action to rebuild and provide income generating activities to improve the tsunami and conflict affected families.
The European Commission is extending support through the UNDP by granting Euros 7.4 million (Approx. Rs. 900 million) for the uplift of the tsunami and conflict affected families in the North and East regions under two projects namely: Quick Recovery Project (QRP), Livelihood Development Project in the North and East (LDP).
Under the quick Recovery Project, the activities will include: support to local bodies by assisting in waste removal and storage; improvement to access roads and transport corridors; provision of employment by engaging in activities such as; debris removal and small infrastructure development.
The activities under the Livelihood project include assisting in the provision of productive inputs in the fisheries and agriculture sectors, construction of associated community infrastructure relating to livelihood development.
The sub-projects will be implemented through the Government Agents of the respective districts and the UNDP. The District Review Board in each district will approve these projects.
During the last few years, the UNDP and the Government have been implementing sustainable livelihood development projects in the North and East with funds given by the EC, Denmark, Australia, Canada and Norway. All these projects address the needs of the conflict and tsunami affected communities with several humanitarian, transition and development activities.
The EC is an active and large donor to Sri Lanka and it provides assistance for relief, infrastructure, rehabilitation, reconstruction, mine action activities and for the promotion of human rights and democracy in Sri Lanka.
The signing of the Grant Contract took place at the RRR Ministry Conference Room on October 31 at 3.00 p.m.
