President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a special statement telecast over Rupavahini last night said that the people now would realise that the decision of the government to ban living within 100 meters from the sea was not a decision taken without thinking. Although some were of the view that the 100 metre Buffer Zone would lead to a reduction of votes, as a people friendly government her government gave priority to the safety of the people rather than thinking about votes, she said, writes Warnajith Sumanasekera, The Daily News 300405 at http://www.dailynews.lk/2005/03/30/

There was a time that countries in the Indian Ocean including Sri Lanka were considered countries that were least vulnerable to natural disasters. But that belief was shattered with the December 26 tsunami catastrophe that Sri Lanka experienced and the government had to be more cautious and take steps to ensure the safety of the people.

But some who called themselves `politicians' and who are opposed to the government, carried out a mischievous campaign against the government by scornfully criticising its decision to introduce a 100 metre Buffer Zone and pressed people to fight against the government's decision. The people now should realise that the government bearing in mind all allegations levelled against it, has acted prudently with a vision and in a very responsible manner, said the President.

Making reference to the earthquake that shook the island close to Sumatra, Indonesia on Monday night, President Kumaratunga paid tribute to the relevant authorities for their timely action, the Armed Forces and Police for their dedication and commitment in trying to convince the people and helped them evacuate their homes as a precaution in the light of the experience the country had undergone with the December 26 calamity.

She also thanked all the media institutions for doing their best to inform the people of another possible disaster and forgetting them to cooperate with the authorities who were trying to help them avoid a repetition of the December 26 catastrophe.
