This policy is going to be drafted with the cooperation of Japanese experts on natural disaster management. The urgency for a national policy on natural disaster management emerged immediately following the December 26 tsunami. The President sought advice from the Governments of America, France and Japan in this regard and the Japanese Government responded to this call swiftly, as stated by the Presidential Secretariat. Accordingly, a team of 32 experts with disaster management experience in multiple fields arrived in the island on March 16 and toured various parts of the country collecting data for the formulation of a national disaster management strategy suitable to Sri Lanka.

The team of experts who went back to Japan is expected to return to the island shortly, bringing with them their report on the matter.

As revealed by a spokesman from the Presidential Secretariat, their scientific plan will be handed over to the President on their return. The President is expecting to discuss the Japanese plan with Sri Lankan experts before the National Policy on Natural Disaster Management is formulated in the final form.
