The Government will implement religious programmes from December 26 to 31 in memory of victims of the tsunami disaster, writes Daily News 191205 at http://www.dailynews.lk/

The Christmas day on December 25 and religious ceremonies on January 1 should not be mixed with these religious programmes, a Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry release said.
Secretary to the President and other Secretaries of relevant Ministries are in charge of National level religious programmes while Chief Secretaries of Provincial Councils, District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries and Grama Niladharis are in-charge of Provincial level, District level, Divisional level and Village level programmes.
Under the National level - Part I programme, the National Flag should be hoisted at full mast before the religious programme is commenced.
8.30 a.m. - Periods of 50 minutes each from 8.30 and to 9.30 should be divided and all religious rights pertaining to Buddhist, Hindu, Catholic/Christian and Islam should be performed during such periods; during three minutes from 9.30 a.m. the bell in all religious places should be rung; and from 9.20 a.m. the bell should be rung for three minutes.
9.24 a.m. - The National Flag should be brought down to half mast in all religious places; 9.28 a.m. - the special prayer and bugles should be sounded in memory of all who died during the tsunami to be broadcast through loud speakers; and 9.30 a.m. - every person in the island should stand still in silence and reflect on all who died in the tsunami disaster.
9.35 a.m. - The commencement of President Mahinda Rajapakse's address to the Nation at the end of the President's speech, the religious ceremonies will come to an end.
Under the National Programme Part II coconut oil lamps or candles should be lit in all houses on December 26 at 7 p.m. in memory of all who died; an all night Pirith ceremony on December 26; giving the morning and the mid-day dana to 100 Buddhist monks on December 27; and religious ceremonies to be held on December 26 in the main Hindu/Catholic/Christian/Islam religious places with the participation of National leaders.
Religious programmes at Provincial, District and Divisional levels should follow the National level programme part I had on December 26 in the same manner.
The President's speech should be broadcast through a loud speaker; advisory speeches can be made in accordance with the necessities of each Province, District and Division; end the ceremony on December 26 and offer dana the following day; and all other religious ceremonies should be performed in the same manner on December 26 evening.
The village should be the main avenue at religious ceremonies to be held at the village level. When this is not possible, some other common place should be made use of.
The national level programme held on December 26 should be performed in the same manner. After listening to the President's address through loud speakers, other addresses and speeches can be made and the ceremony will come to an end.
Religious ceremonies should be held at all religious places in villages on December 26 evening in memory of those who died.
Everyone should participate in various religious ceremonies from December 27 to 31 at various places in the island.
