The investment for the project is Rs. 20 million and it has received a grant from the UNDP special unit for South Co-operation and the Technonet Asia.

Under this project, over 650 of micro industrialists who live in the coastal area islandwide obtained machinery and equipment to be utilised in their business.

IDB Chairman Jaliya Nawinna and the Director of Technonet Asia, Mahinda Thenabadu, signed the agreement at the Cinnamon Grand on Sunday.

Rural Industries and Self-employment Promotion Minister S. B. Nawinna said the tsunami has affected 4389 industries in the country according to a survey conducted by the IDB.

Out of the total affected industries 59 percent are micro scale industries while 38 percent small, one- percent medium and one- percent large-scale industries were affected.

"Most of these micro and small-scale industrialists were engaged in business in the coastal areas. These industrialists have been completely affected due to this devastation and they have lost their machinery, tools, equipment, raw materials and semi finished goods and vehicles as well.

These also face the risk of losing their orders.

"The IDB is keen in supporting them to get back to business and it is our responsibility to protect them engaging in many social and community activities through many local and foreign funds.

"We were able to implement a speedy development programme to promote them by providing machinery, raw material and equipment through the IDB which was able to promote their livelihood.

The Ministry has paid attention to implement many development programmes under the "Mahinda Chinthana" with the assistance of the private sector to increase their contribution to drive the national economy.

IDB Chairman Jaliya Nawinna said that this project would be completed within three months. We will follow up these industrialists' progress through constant monitoring.

The IDB will select 100 industrialists as a second project, to train and educate them targeting continuous development of their productivity to the local and the international market.
