Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake told the media yesterday that the strategy will address all aspects of disaster management ranging from policy making, risk assessment, early warning systems to risk mitigation and management.

The strategy will be presented to the public on December 30.

"In the shocking aftermath of the tsunami, Sri Lankans felt the need for a mechanism which will prepare the country to withstand the effects of natural disasters.

The Sri Lanka Disaster Management Act establishing the National Council for Disaster Management (NCDM) was passed in Parliament to address this need," he said. The Premier said that the national disaster management strategy will be implemented by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), a subordinate body set up under the NCDM which is responsible for formulating policies on disaster management.

"The strategy consists of seven major components including policy making, risk assessment, multi-hazard early warning system, risk reduction and pubic awareness. It will also identify and coordinate multi stakeholder efforts on disaster management in the next 10 years," he said.

Secretary to the Disaster Management Ministry Dr. Upananda Vidanapathirana and DMC Director General Major General Gamini Hettiarachchi were also present.
