This project was coordinated by the Tsunami Facility of Dutch Private Initiatives in Sri Lanka established by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Colombo associated with the Netherlands Alumni Association of Lanka (NAAL).

The City of Vlaardingen which is a fishing village is situated flanking the worlds largest harbour, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, which is famous for a type of fish called " Herrings."

The City of Vlaardingen have donated 24 boats at a cost of over Rs. 8 million to fishermen in Sri Lanka and intends to continue depending on the availability of funds, said NAAL President S.P.C. Kumarasinghe.

Ms. Tharanga Gamage the coordinator of the project at the Dhanusha Marine Boat Yard said that the funds for the project was raised by a Council member Ms. Yvonne Batenburg and Vlaardingen Mayor Bruinsma.

The special feature of the project was that each boat donated to the Sri Lankan fishermen carried a name inherent to Vlaardingen. Vlaardingen is a name of a famous fishing boat. The boats carried the name and place of the donors, Ms. Gamage said.

The boat in the picture was donated by Jan and Joke who celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary recently.

The couple had requested all the invitees to their anniversary party to donate funds to purchase a boat for a Sri Lankan fisherman who suffered following the tsunami tragedy in December 2004, instead of giving presents to them, Tharanga added.

NAAL President Kumarasinghe said that as a gesture to the couple, Jan and Joke, the boat in the picture was named -VL30 Janen Joke.
